Alps and River Valleys, One Walking-and-Cycling Country

Austria does alpine scenery as well as anywhere in Europe, and with better infrastructure than most. In the Tyrol, mountain trails cross high meadows between wooden-balconied villages where the Gasthof has been welcoming walkers for generations. The Salzkammergut links lake to lake through forest and limestone, gentler but no less scenic. Along the Danube, one of Europe’s great cycling paths follows the river through the Wachau wine region, flat, unhurried, and lined with apricot orchards and baroque abbeys.

The experience

Alps and River Valleys, One Walking-and-Cycling Country

Walking

Alpine Meadows to Lakeside Paths

The Tyrolean Alps offer the full alpine experience: high meadows, mountain huts, and genuine elevation. The Salzkammergut is gentler, linking lakes through forest and limestone. Most routes are graded moderate, and the Tyrolean high trails are the most demanding option on our Austria list.

Cycling

The Danube and Beyond

The Danube cycling path through the Wachau is one of Europe’s great riverside rides: flat, well-surfaced, and lined with vineyards, apricot orchards and baroque abbeys. It’s one of the easiest and most scenic multi-day cycling routes on our list.
