Germany’s landscapes shift more than its reputation suggests. In the Black Forest, dense spruce woodland gives way to waterfalls, ridgeline meadows and half-timbered villages that feel untouched by the last century. Along the Mosel, terraced vineyards climb steeply from the river on some of the country’s most scenic cycling roads. In Bavaria, the Alps rise properly for the first time, foothill trails leading toward peaks that stay snow-capped well into summer.
The Black Forest offers the most accessible introduction: well-marked, moderate terrain through waterfall-threaded woodland and half-timbered villages. Bavaria’s foothill trails ask a bit more in exchange for genuinely dramatic alpine scenery. The Bavarian Alps are the most demanding option on our Germany list.
The Mosel Valley’s riverside path between terraced vineyards offers some of the easiest multi-day cycling in Germany, with a cellar-door tasting rarely more than an hour’s ride away. It’s a natural starting point for a first self-guided cycling holiday.
