This route follows one of Europe’s most undisturbed coastlines, along Portugal’s little-known southwest, where honey-coloured cliffs give way to ravines, virgin beaches and deserted coves washed by the Atlantic. It runs through the Costa Vicentina, Europe’s largest coastal natural park, an area of real biodiversity where deserted beaches draw egrets and turtles and Europe’s only marine stork colony nests on offshore sea stacks.
Late spring brings the cliff tops alive with Mediterranean wildflowers, eucalyptus and thyme, but the pace of life here stays unhurried year-round. Whitewashed fishing villages offer a glimpse of a way of life that’s changed little in decades, and each day ends with a glass of local wine, fresh seafood, and the sound of the Atlantic on the shore.
